It's early, but doughnuts!

Anderson had just gotten off work. Working a full day meant starting at 6am and getting off at 6am the next morning, it was still early. There was plenty of sleep to be had most nights if Vanessa stayed indoors. Lucky for him, last night had been relatively quiet. But still 6am was early. He didn’t want to get up before 10. Given everything going on lately, he hadn’t been much of one who had wanted company. Maxwell had been annoying; but he wouldn’t get the chance to enjoy the man’s bickering anymore. Martin was taking time off and that left the WhitTech agents working more shifts; while Anderson tried to hire at least one new person. Well hiring wasn’t the issue, it was more a promotion.

Everyone at WhitTech security knew the highest paid spots belonged to those who worked Vanessa’s detail and how rare the spots were. They also thought they had the pecking order figured out. Anderson didn’t want to tell them how wrong they were. He’d somehow managed to get Delilah to keep him company at the bakery. Maybe it was just the doughnuts but at least he wasn’t like the guy over in the corner with his head stuck in the paper because he had no one to talk to. His coffee arrived and her took a sip of it looking over towards Delilah. He wasn’t by any means ignoring his company; he was just sometimes silent. Especially, when he was lost in thought.

“Sorry, I zoned for a moment.” Anderson was at the least behind honest. But tactically thinking about work when he was off was about as useful as the pair of galoshes on the beach. Though sometimes he couldn’t help it. Usually Anderson wasn’t much one for apologies but he had asked Delilah here with him and now he was the one being silent. He guessed there were worse things to be.

Having friends was hard as a nurse either you were friends with your fellow nurses whom you probably hated because every single one of you was running off of nothing more than caffeine,  or you had no friends. Falling in with the Whitech Crew had been easy they were frequently in and out of her ER at all hours, and kept everyone on their toes. If you had asked her to pinpoint the moment that she become friends with Anderson Briggs, Delilah wouldn’t have been able to, it was more of like a when hadn’t they been friends? She did recall the pivotal moment he walked through her ER door, looking like he did now like he was somewhere else. She also vividly remembered several other nurses perking up as he waltzed through the double doors.

Whatever he was thinking about, he was deep in because he hadn’t even questioned her choice of breakfast this morning. Anderson attempted to sleep the day away and Delilah devoured questionable food at awkward hours, that was their deal and everything seemed flip-flopped this morning. Today she had picked the choicest of breakfast foods ordering two cake doughnuts to go, paired with an affogato aka gelato paired with a shot of espresso. Tapping the toe of her booted foot to the beat of the song playing through the speakers, one of the reasons she had agreed to meet Anderson here was that it was one of her favorite places. The bakery was cozy with its yellowed walls, always playing her favorite music, and filled with delicious treats.

Leaning back in the tufted seat and closing her eyes for a moment before Anderson spoke. Eyelids fluttered open, she wasn’t bored or put off Anderson was just, Anderson and he was being quiet it was of no use to be offended. “You’ve been zoned all morning.” She spoke softly opening her eyes after she stretched. “You didn’t even make fun of my breakfast.” She smiled returning to a more normal seated position. “What’s on your mind?”

[attr="class","Briggsnert"]Anderson heard Delilah’s voice and it brought him back to reality for a minute. He chuckled when she mentioned him not making fun of her breakfast. “You would have expected me to, where is the fun if you see it coming?” He tried to save himself and failed miserably as usual. Though at least he was talking? Theoretically anyway. Words were coming out of his mouth if anyone wanted to argue the point.

Then that four word question seemed more loaded then a twelve gauge shotgun. He decided though that it was better. “Work among other things.” It wasn’t a lie most everything else circled back around to work, it was just vague. Though to be honest, she was far more interesting than his mind would lead anyone to believe at the moment.

“But I’m enjoying the distraction from my reverie.” He complimented, though anyone who knew Anderson would know that his compliments came as teasing remarks almost always. There was even a cheeky grin to accompany the remark. “I mean at some point this pretty woman sat down at the table with me to join me for coffee” He knew she’d been sitting with him since they got there but he could poke fun. Besides it made him feel better if he joked around. Though this morning the jokester seemed to be in semi hiding while things seemed dim. “And I appreciate the distraction.” The comment was a little less on the joking side and more on the serious side. If it wasn’t for her here with him, then he wasn’t sure how he was going to handle things. He just wished he could talk to her about things, but his job made that hard.
